To Get A Good Night’s Sleep, Have A Plan

What do physical fitness, mental acuity, emotional health, and weight issues all have in common? They can all be negatively impacted by lack of sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep – and getting it regularly – can be a challenge in the best of times. Add the stresses of military life, especially deployment, and you can be looking at some serious sleep deprivation.

A study by the American Academy of Sleep medicine found that military deployments have significant impact on sleep during and after the time away. The study looked at more than 41,000 deployed and post-deployment military members and found:

  • Military members in Iraq and Afghanistan were 28% more likely to have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep than those who had not yet deployed.
  • Among those surveyed after deployment, 21% more likely to have trouble sleeping than those who had not yet deployed.
  • Participants with mental health problems such as PTSD or depression, or those who rated their general health as only fair or poor, were twice as likely as other participants to report trouble sleeping.
